As the New Year approaches, many of us make resolutions with the intention of improving ourselves and our lives. But let’s be honest, it can be tough to stick to our resolutions and see them through to completion.
Let me share with you what I learned from the most successful clients I work with and how they manage to stay on track to their goals when they feel like quitting.
1. Make specific and measurable goals
Rather than resolving to “exercise more,” set a specific goal such as “exercise for at least 30 minutes, 3 times per week.” This makes it easier to track your progress and see how you’re doing.
2. Create a plan
Break your goal down into smaller, achievable steps and make a plan for how you’ll accomplish them. For example, if your goal is to save money, determine how much you’ll need to save each month and set up an automatic transfer to your savings account.
3. Hold yourself accountable
Share your goals with someone you trust, such as a friend or family member, and ask them to hold you accountable. Consider hiring a coach or joining a support group to help you stay on track.
4. Celebrate your progress
Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to reward yourself. Celebrate your progress along the way and give yourself a pat on the back for the steps you’ve taken towards achieving your goal.
5. Don’t be too hard on yourself
It’s natural to encounter setbacks and obstacles along the way. If you miss a workout or overspend on a budget, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, focus on getting back on track and try to learn from your mistakes.
By setting specific and achievable goals, creating a plan, holding yourself accountable, and celebrating your progress, you can increase your chances of hitting your New Year’s resolutions this year.
Don’t give up, and remember that every step you take towards achieving your goals is a step in the right direction. (I’m talking to myself here!)
